It is because procrastination does not make you less creative or take away your talents as a consequence. Procrastination is not a sign of inability to complete a task; it’s a choice to not commence any. For procrastinators, there is no compromise on the quality of their work. They do not experience emotions like anxiety and panic completely unless they are a day or an hour close to submitting their work. Hence, procrastination is hard to unlearn because it does not take away neither your abilities nor your confidence.
When you procrastinate, you would think you’d work on something lighter related to your work, but not start your actual work yet. Then eventually, you get carried away and do things that are actually not at all relevant to your urgent needs and also probably disrupt your entire schedule for the day. But the reason you continue to do so, in spite of feeling guilty about it all the while knowing that you have a commitment that you are accountable for, is because you feel good in the moment. It is because you give more importance to your current well- being than pay heed to your future disasters.
Procrastination also gives you a wrong courage to challenge yourself to push things until it is no longer possible to. If you like to indulge yourself in procrastination, it is because it also promotes an alarmingly false sense of self- esteem. It makes you believe that you can work wonders in the last minute, hence, there is no need to worry. There’d typically be no problem if this were always true. Unfortunately, it’s not. Depending upon the amount of work you have, your anxiety levels rise as you get closer to your deadlines, and the normally wondrous mind is probably exhausted by then, which means you can’t work anymore.
Which is one of the qualities in which you differ from the non- procrastinators. Everybody postpones work many times than they’d want to but they also make a plan to avoid the risk of failure. You will know if you have made a habit out of procrastination if you simply avoid tasks, big or small, even at the cost of failure. Knowingly you drift away, if you put off the tasks that don’t consume a lot of your time, but you do so anyway.
‘The mind unlearns with difficulty what it has long learned’. What we can understand from this quote by Seneca is that once you make a habit of something, it will be very difficult to break from that habit. However, it is still possible. Now that you know that procrastination is not a virtue, you can try and break free from it. Maybe not entirely, but enough to not let the habit spoil your present/ future.
