Memory refers to the channel that we use to recollect the information that we gained through experience. Memory can be sensory, short- term and long- term. Sensory memory is related to the senses. It is momentary like when you accidentally touch a hot water glass and back off. Short- term memory is the place where any information received stays in the brain for at least 30 minutes to 3-4 days or until the need to restore that information is complete, like noting down a new phone number. Long term memory is the place the information that is practised several times stays. The data saved in the long- term memory can last for a life- time, like your name.

Good memory is a sign of well- being. A strong memory is important in order to consume content and reproduce it. Memory is required to learn new skills, remember what you like and dislike, to reproduce what you know, and a fundamental need for progress. However, the faculty of the human memory has drastically decreased in the recent times, but the good news is that you can re- build your memory power.

Tips to Improve Your Memory

  • Memory and concentration are strongly interlinked. Hence, instead of concentrating on how to remember, concentrate on paying attention. Hone your listening skills. Activities such as making a conversation, cooking, playing sport or an instrument etc., can be very helpful in developing your attention span.
  • Use retrieval clues to remember events, episodes or notes. Retrieval cues are the most effective ways of recollecting information that you can’t readily seem access. These cues can range from a funny episode to a name or a figure that you associate with the memory that you can’t access. It provides a kickstart for the data to kick in.
  • Recite what you read, listen and even see. Sharing information with another person or writing down the occurrences in your life means almost re-living the entire event again chronologically. This helps in sharpening your storing power.
  • While studying, especially, use numbers or symbols to remember lengthy paragraphs. You can also use mnemonic devices to remember the order of certain information. It is also a quick way to immediately identify if you missed out on any point.
  • Eat healthy and always hydrate yourself.
